Virtual Tour of the Art and Decor of The White House: The State Floor

This was done to link the new portico with the earlier carved roses above the entrance. Thomas Jefferson added his own personal touches upon moving in a few months later, installing two water closets and working with architect Benjamin Latrobe to add bookending terrace-pavilions. Having transformed the building into a more suitable representation of a leader’s home, Jefferson held the first inaugural open house in 1805, and also opened its doors for public tours and receptions on New Year’s Day and the Fourth of July. Not long after the inauguration of President George Washington in 1789, plans to build an official President’s House in a federal district along the Potomac River took shape. A contest to find a builder produced a winning design from Irish-born architect James Hoban, who modeled his building after an Anglo-Irish villa in Dublin called the Leinster House.

Theodore Roosevelt used the Red Room as a "smoking room" where male guests adjourned after dinner for cigars and brandy. The room continues to be used today as a parlor for guests after dinner and during receptions. Red RoomThe most striking element of this room is its vibrant red color scheme.

When the 1902 Grand Staircase was rebuilt during the Truman renovation, it was redirected to open into the Entrance Hall for more dramatic formal descents from the Second Floor. Visitors are greeted at the north facade, with stately columns and a pedimented portico — very Classical in design. The "back" of the house, the south side with a rounded portico, is the personal "backyard" for the executive. This is the less formal side of the property, where presidents have planted rose gardens, vegetable gardens, and constructed temporary athletic and play equipment. In 1800, when the home was almost finished, America's second president, John Adams and his wife Abigail moved in. Costing $232,372, the house was considerably smaller than the grand palace L'Enfant had envisioned.

Construction began in October of 1792 with the laying of the first cornerstone. The building was constructed between 1792 and 1800 using Aquia sandstone from the Government Island quarry (also a supplier of stone for the exterior of the US Capitol), bricks made in kilns near the site, and lumber from forests in Maryland and Virginia. Located at the country’s most well-known address, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave in Washington, DC, the White House is America’s most iconic home. The official residence and office of the president of the United States, the White House has been the home of every president since John Adams and the site of some of the most important events in American history. The first presidential palace was a stately yet simple house made of pale gray sandstone, later covered with white lime. The second floor is occupied by support staff, including the first lady’s office, the social secretary, the White House calligrapher, and other formal correspondence staff.

The wide variation underscores the problem pollsters face in measuring Kennedy voters. His backers come from both the left and the right and disagree widely on many issues. Disaffected people are inherently hard to poll — they tend not to readily respond to surveys — and hard to predict in terms of turnout.

The Royal Exchange and Newcomen Bank also influenced Hoban’s designs for the home of American presidents. General George Washington was sworn in as the first President of the United States in 1789 in New York City. By 1790 New York State had built a house for the president and his family.

The current ground floor of the residence connects to the first floor of the East and West Wings, a connection made easier by the building’s position on a small hill. Some spaces, such as the air conditioning room, the water purification plant, the control room, and the electrical switching room, are two stories high. The current White House covers an area of approximately 5,109.67 square meters, spread over 6 floors that house 132 rooms and 35 bathrooms, in addition to other facilities. The White House kitchen can serve dinner to a maximum of 140 guests and hors d’oeuvres to over 1,000. The Kennedys renovated the White House’s decor and furnishings once again.

Inside, there are 412 doors, 147 windows, 28 fireplaces, 8 staircases, and 3 elevators. It includes a billiards room, a workout room, a solarium, and a music room added by the Clinton family. Above the pantry, the Usher’s office, and the lobby elevator on the first floor is a mezzanine that includes some small closets, another pantry for pastries, and the clock room. As a matter of fact, Jimmy Carter installed solar panels on the roof of the West Wing, above the Cabinet Room in 1977, way before this technology became mainstream.

At the suggestion of George Washington, the Irish-born architect James Hoban traveled to the federal capital and submitted a project. The “White House”, proposed by Hoban, was a refined Georgian-style mansion, in the style of Palladio. Many historians believe that James Hoban’s design was based on his design for the Leinster House (1748) in Dublin, Ireland, excluding the north and south porticoes, which is currently the seat of the Irish parliament.

Previously, it served as accommodation for the staff, but now that there is no longer any staff that lives in the White House, the rooms have been repurposed for usage by the first families in a variety of ways. Some of them built an exercise room, some a music room, while others still built family rooms and other spaces. The residence has a total of four levels, including a basement and a sub-basement.

While Mr. Fetterman may have been in the minority among his political peers, with most of whom following the president’s example and opting for a traditional tux, creative black tie proved a talking point. See Billy Porter in a black sequin caftan over a classic white shirt; Questlove, in an artistically paint-splattered jacket; and Fran Drescher, the SAG-AFTRA president, in a white brocade pantsuit. A day after Naomi Judd’s death, the Country Music Hall of Fame moved forward with the induction of her and daughter Wynonna. The most recent Quinnipiac University national poll for example, showed 16% of registered voters saying they would support Kennedy if the election were being held today. Harris flew to the Bay Area for a homestretch anti-recall rally alongside the governor. Privately, each didn’t mind watching the other squirm just a bit, say those familiar with their personal dynamic.
